Formal Paper #3 – Compare and Contrast
Harriet A. Washington’s “The Machine Age: African American Martyrs To Surgical
Technology”
Paul Hsieh’s article “UK To Experiment on Cardiac Arrest Patients Without Their
Consent”
Write a well-developed essay in response to the following:
We’ve read Harriet A. Washington’s chapter “The Machine Age” from her 2006 book
Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to the Present and Paul Hsieh’s article “UK to Experiment on Cardiac Arrest Patients Without Their Consent” from Forbes’ August 27, 2014 issue. In Washington’s chapter, she considers how medical researchers and medical care professionals abuse their roles to exploit patients by subjecting them to experimental treatments in life-or-death, emergency care situations. For this reason, Washington cites the subjects of the AbioCor heart transplant study, the subjects of the PolyHeme and the Hemopure blood transfusion studies, and others. Similarly, Hsieh considers the validity of the Warwick Clinical Trials Unit’s study of cardiac arrest subjects when these individuals and their loved ones are unaware of their involvement in the study. Both authors are concerned with the level of information these people are given.
Write a paper that compares and/or contrasts Washington’s chapter and Hsieh’s article by responding to the following:
Should informed consent be withheld to aid in scientific progress? You can consider the following to help you develop your discussion: Do Washington’s and Hsieh’s studies reveal a connection between the exploitation of subjects in experimental treatment situations and their socioeconomic standing? Is informed consent in life-or-death, emergency care situations necessary? Is withholding consent ethical?
Your response to the main question will serve as your thesis statement that must be supported with specific points from each reading to develop the body of your paper. You must use both readings in each of your body paragraphs and pull quotes from each reading as support.
This paper should follow standard grammatical and spelling conventions. It must have an introduction, thesis, topic sentences, well-supported paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph.
Your paper must adhere to the following guidelines:
1. APA format (see sample APA paper)
2. One-inch margins all around
3. Times New Roman font; font size 12 points.
4. Length: 3-5 pages
